Patio vs Pergola
When you start researching what you will build – You may wonder at what is the actual difference between the two.
A patio - It is attached to your home.
It could be an extension of the house and the roof line is extended out to create your undercover space it is a completely separate structure that is attached your existing home
A pergola - Is typically a free standing feature that is not connected to the house. Often you will see these built above an outdoor paved or decked area to provide shade.
Next to a pool is also an idea spot for a pergola. No need to go to the full expense of building a cabana if you have the right pergola design.
Patio Style Roof Options
Flat or Skillion
These are quick to install. Typically they are built directly from the roof edge and then use two support posts to hold a flat roof. The roof can have a slight pitch to it.
These are also a flat style roof but they sit above your existing roof line and have a pitch. They offer greater ceiling height and airflow. They also bring an architectural design element to a home.
Gabled or Pitched
Open sides and peaked roofs create a more airy and spacious feel. They are the ideal roof design to have ceiling fans installed to create the airflow we all desire in the humid summer months.
This is a popular option of having a gabled or pitched section and a flat style roof section
Newer roof designs can now have a ceiling effect. This is a great way to have lighting and fans installed with a super neat finish
Pergola Roof Styles
Pergolas are typically more simple structures and the use of wooden posts and cross beams are the main feature.
The cross beams can be placed close together to create dappled shade or they can be spaced wider apart.
Roofing can be added for weather protection.
They can be small and add an entrance way to a house or added to balcony areas.
Or they can be larger and cover an entire outdoor area
